Welcome to High Desert Mini Aussies!

At High Desert Mini Aussies, we’re a small, family-based breeder dedicated to raising happy, healthy, and well-socialized Miniature Australian Shepherds. Our dogs aren’t just breeders—they’re our beloved pets and family members. We proudly produce only one litter a year, ensuring each puppy gets the love, attention, and early care they deserve.

Our mama, Daizy, is a stunning blue merle, dual registered with AKC and ACA. This will be her fourth litter, and she’s an incredible mother with a calm, affectionate temperament. Our dad, Doobie, is a handsome black tri, ACA registered and merle gene tested, producing beautiful, healthy, and smart pups every time.

All of our puppies come with:

  • Tails docked & dew claws removed

  • First vaccinations & vet check

  • Happy, confident personalities ready for their forever homes

  • Early socialization with kids, cats, rabbits, and other dogs

  • Registration papers are available for an additional fee.

FUN FACTS

Miniature American Shepherd Facts [Mini Aussie]

  • Breed Overview

The Miniature American Shepherd (MAS) is a small, versatile herding dog that originated in the United States.

The breed was developed in the 1960s–1970s from smaller Australian Shepherds to create a more compact, travel-friendly version with the same intelligence and energy.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) officially recognized the breed in 2015 under the Herding Group.

  • Intelligence & Trainability

Mini American Shepherds are highly intelligent and eager to learn, ranking among the smartest dog breeds.

They pick up commands quickly and excel in obedience, agility, rally, and herding trials.

Because they’re quick thinkers, they do best with consistent training and plenty of mental challenges.

  • Temperament

Loyal, affectionate, and family-oriented, MAS are often called “velcro dogs” because they love staying close to their people.

They’re gentle with kids and can get along well with other pets when properly socialized.

Naturally protective and alert, they make excellent watchdogs without being overly aggressive.

  • Size & Appearance

Height: 13–18 inches at the shoulder

Weight: 20–40 pounds

Coat colors: Blue merle, red merle, black, and red, even tri's often with white markings and copper trim.

Eyes can be blue, brown, amber, or even two different colors (heterochromia).

The MAS has a medium-length double coat that’s weather-resistant and soft to the touch.

  • Energy & Exercise

These dogs are energetic, athletic, and playful, thriving in active households.

They love outdoor adventures — hiking, running, agility, or herding — and need daily exercise to stay happy and balanced.

Without enough stimulation, they can get bored and may invent their own mischief!

  • Health & Lifespan

Average lifespan: 12–15 years.

Routine vet care, proper nutrition, and exercise help them live long, active lives.

  • Grooming

Moderate shedders — weekly brushing keeps their coat shiny and reduces loose hair.

Heavier shedding typically happens twice a year (spring and fall).

Bath as needed, but not too often — their coat naturally repels dirt.

  • Ideal Home

The Mini American Shepherd fits perfectly in active families or rural homes where they can run and play.

They adapt well to different lifestyles as long as they get plenty of exercise and attention.

Their loyal, intuitive nature makes them both great working dogs and loving companions.

The breed’s nickname is often “Mini Aussie,” though the AKC formally calls them Miniature American Shepherds.

Many MAS have herding instincts so strong that they’ll try to “herd” children or other pets gently.

They’re known for their expressive eyes and big personalities in a small package.
